Man's split-second decision leads to couple winning $1.6 million

A couple who won a division-one lottery prize admit their first purchase isn’t one you would expect from new millionaires.

The man in his 40s purchased the winning ticket from Woodvale Boulevard News, in Perth’s north, and won $1.6 million in the Saturday Lotto, which prompted his wife to go on a bizarre shopping spree.

“My wife has already been to the shops to buy an air fryer,” the man told Lotterywest, adding after purchasing the air fryer he and his wife went home and he folded the washing.

The family did have plans to pay off their mortgage and go on a holiday to the Gold Coast.

The man said he was glad he stuck with his instincts when purchasing the lottery ticket.

“When I went to buy the ticket there were two lines, I’m glad I went with my gut and picked not only the faster line, but the winning one,” he said.

The man was one of three division-one winners last week, all pocketing $1.6 million.

Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said there had been six division-one winners in Perth this year – five of those winners coming from the city’s northern suburbs.

“The challenge is now on for our southern suburb players to join our winners list,” Mr Mooney said.

One lottery store in Perth sold two winning lottery tickets just one week apart, which is where another one of the Saturday division-one winners purchased their ticket.

“It’s just luck and the goodwill of the customers,” Carramar Lottery Centre store owner Milan Gohil said.

A week before a couple who were told by a clairvoyant they would come into some money also purchased their winning ticket from Carramar Lottery Centre.

The psychic guessed they would receive about $500,000 and $600,000, yet the couple went on to win $866,700 in Saturday Lotto.

“I always thought if we won it would be high fives and champagne, but instead we sat there like stunned mullets,” the winning couple said at the time.
