Worker dies after falling down trench in tragic workplace accident

A worker has died in a tragic accident on a building site north of Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to the worksite at Wallan on Thursday about 3pm after reports a worker had fallen down a six-metre deep trench.

Bystanders tried to rescue him but there was nothing they could do.

It’s believed the workers had been installing a drainage system at the site known as Springridge estate.

Resident Melissa Cesmir said the man’s death came as a shock to the community.

“I feel for their family and their workmates that worked with him every day,” she said.

Firefighters said the trench did not give way and they believe the man fell.

WorkSafe has launched an investigation.
