Depraved group tortures and kills kangaroo and joey on Melbourne street

A Melbourne man has documented the gruesome scene he discovered after finding a group of men torturing and killing kangaroos and a joey near a national park on the city's outskirts.

Robert Bishop posted the gruesome images to his website after finding a group of men "gathered around a twitching kangaroo".

"The unfortunate kangaroo was upside down, its legs splayed wide and one of the men was hacking away at it with a very large knife," Mr Bishop wrote.

"The other males were talking excitedly and watching the spectacle.

"Another group was on the grass and I could hear a hammering sound coming from them."

According to Mr Bishop he had earlier frightened away two four wheel drives which had been "hooning" around the neighbourhood near the Churchill National Park harassing wildlife.

He came across the violent scene about an hour later but the men fled while he was calling police.

Mr Bishop said it was not unusual to find people harassing wildlife in the area but the March 23 discovery was the worst he had seen.

Upon returning to the scene, Mr Bishop said he found two disemboweled kangaroos and a decapitated joey in the road.

"Both kangaroos had been gutted and their entrails were spilling all over the ground. One of them had even had one of its legs hacked off," he wrote.

He said it appeared the unborn joey had still been alive when it was cut from its mother.

RSPCA spokeswoman Sophie Buchanan told Fairfax Media her organisation was 'sickened' by the acts and urged anyone with information to call the police of RSPCA.

"There is a known link between violence against animals and violence against people," she said.

"We take deliberate acts of violence against animals very, very seriously."

She said those responsible could face fines up to $74,000 and two years in prison.

Mr Bishop has now set up a fundraising page to help him buy CCTV cameras to catch future acts of cruelty in the area on camera.
