TikTok trend explained: Berries and cream remix

If you've scrolled through TikTok recently you've probably come across a strange soundbite, involving a somewhat mischievous voice saying "berries and cream" in a sing-song voice.

The sound has dominated TikTok in 2021, but it really took off in August.

Now, a remixed version is taking over users' For You pages. Some users are embracing it and others are feeling like they can't escape it.

What is the actual trend?

The trend just involves remixing popular songs and well-known sounds on TikTok to include "berries and cream."

The sound took over TikTok after users discovered the soundbite from an old Starbursts commercial, involving the now infamous, Berries and Cream Boy, or as he's also known — The Little Lad.

The hashtag #berriesandcreamremix currently has over 54 million views and has remixed hits like Dolly Parton's Jolene, Cardi B's WAP and even Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

Users have taken it in some wild directions, including interrupting serious conversations or monologues.

Other people are dressing as The Little Lad, donning a 19th century Lord's outfit or a haircut resembling a Lord Farquaad (from Shrek) style haircut.

Where does the trend come from?

The trend is an evolution of another trend that took TikTok by a storm — Berries and Cream.

In a 2007 commercial, the Berries and Cream Boy — who dons a Lord Farquaad-style outfit and haircut — starts singing and dancing about how much he loves the berries and cream flavour of Starbursts.

It is possible that the zany character may have also been inspired by the literary character known as the Little Lord Fauntleroy from a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

In the commercial, two men are standing next to each other when one asks the other if they've tried the new berries and cream Starbursts flavour.

Before the other man can answer, the Berries and Cream Boy appears and interrupts asking: "Pardon me, what kind of Starburst did you just say?"

The first man begins to answer saying, "Berries and..." but before he can finish his sentence, the Berries and Cream boy asks: "Berries and what else?".

He then launches into a dance, clapping his hands and singing his now-famous soundbite: "Berries and creme, berries and cream, I'm a little lad who loves berries and cream."

However, the newest version involves TikTok users remixing this sound with popular sounds and songs.

Biggest videos of the trend so far?

The Little Lad himself, the actor who played the role in the ad, Jack Ferver even jumped on board the trend, with the TikTok account @thereallittlelad.

Others include a snake, made to look as though it is mouthing and dancing to "berries and cream", while other popular videos are ones mixed with popular songs.

Why is it so popular?

It's weird and it can be interpreted in really, whatever way the user feels.

The trend is also based on a sound which is whacky, weird, catchy and hard to get out of your head — as well as easy to reenact and slip into other songs, soundbites and speeches.
