Call for $2m art for stadium

Call for art to adorn stadium

WA's culture, landscape, history and community will be celebrated at the Perth Stadium with the State Government today calling for art submissions to be part of the new venue.

Artists are being asked to register their interest to create the first of four permanent artworks for the new Perth Stadium.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said $2 million had been allocated to public art in the Stadium and Sports Precinct under the State Government's Percent for Art Scheme.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for local artists to start thinking about what sort of pieces they could create to be featured across the new Perth Stadium and Sports Precinct when it opens in early 2018," she said.

"The selected artworks will celebrate Western Australia's culture, landscape, history and community, while responding to the curatorial themes of people, land and sport."

This morning, The West Australian revealed the design for a towering $1.3m sculpture for Elizabeth Quay, which also comes under the Percent for Art Scheme.

The first stadium piece will be located in the north of the Sports Precinct, alongside the Swan River-fed lake. It will be a permanent land art installation and integrated into the landscape design, encouraging visitors of all ages to explore its different forms.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day encouraged local, national and international artists to register their interest.

"The Percent For Art Scheme aims to improve the quality and value of public facilities in Western Australia while creating opportunities for artists," Mr Day said.

"We have seen fantastic artworks delivered as part of this scheme on many Government projects, including Elizabeth Quay and both Fiona Stanley and Perth Children's hospitals. I have no doubt we will see some inspiring creations for the Stadium and Sports Precinct."

The artist or artists commissioned for this first opportunity are expected to be appointed by the end of 2015 and the other three artwork opportunities will be released in the following months.
