Hames plugs waterfront light show
Tourism Minister Kim Hames wants to stage a regular "sound and light spectacular" at Elizabeth Quay, with dancing fountains, laser lights and loud music.
He has already initiated talks with Premier Colin Barnett, Planning Minister John Day and Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority chief executive Kieran Kinsella about including the "spectacular" in Elizabeth Quay planning.
Dr Hames told a Tourism Council breakfast yesterday that the event could be similar to light and fountain shows in Guangzhou, China, and Sentosa Island, Singapore.
"I see everyone sitting in the cafes and bars at Elizabeth Quay after work on a Friday night or, on Saturday nights, families packed around Elizabeth Quay eating fish and chips and watching this amazing sound and light spectacular," he said.
"You would have a series of fountains, lights and loud music, with the fountains going in time with the music and laser lights playing alongside.
"I think it would be a big drawcard."
Dr Hames said he was also keen to see Aboriginal culture on show at Elizabeth Quay.
He said visitors to Perth often complained about the lack of a top-quality "Aboriginal experience" in Perth and Elizabeth Quay provided an opportunity to rectify this situation.
