Effort to put Stirling statue in its place

A statute of WA founder Capt. James Stirling could find a home at Perth’s Town Hall after being in storage several times, the latest for more than three years.

Weeks afterThe West Australian exposed the statue’s uncertain future, a report to City of Perth has proposed it go to the Town Hall’s undercroft or Stirling Gardens on Barrack Street.

The hall was recommended as most suitable subject to logistics and cost with Stirling Gardens the best alternative.

Prince Charles unveiled the statue in front of the former R&I Bank office in Barrack Street in 1979 for WA’s 150th anniversary.

It was moved to near the hall but was stored away in March 2012 for the Old Treasury Buildings redevelopment.

A report to the PCC finance committee tomorrow recommends the hall site because it is the closest available to its original location and near a commemorative plaque but warned of possible effects on periodic markets and a time capsule.

Other proposed sites were the Swan River foreshore, outside Council House and in a park near the Concert Hall.
