Detail in Aussie cartoon Bluey triggers age-old debate: 'Bloody outrage'

It's the Aussie children's show loved right around the world.

But Bluey, the Emmy-winning cartoon, has stirred controversy back home thanks to a seemingly innocuous scene from one episode.

A shot of the contents of Bluey's fridge has sparked a debate among Australians on Reddit.

The show, about a six-year-old Blue Heeler dog, has inadvertently reignited the age-old debate about where popular breakfast staple Vegemite belongs.

"Errr does the Vegemite go in the fridge?" one person questioned on Reddit.

The user shared a shot from the show, where a jar, which looks strikingly similar to Vegemite, is seen in the fridge.

The original poster said the Vegemite in their household sits in the cupboard, which they claimed is the correct place to store it.

"Surely it goes solid in the fridge???" they questioned.

Another user said Vegemite in the fridge was "a bloody outrage".

Expert gives opinion on common debate

Yahoo News Australia previously spoke with CSIRO senior food microbiologist Cathy Moir, who confirmed spreads, like Vegemite, can be stored in the cupboard.

“Peanut butter and Vegemite have a high sugar content but low acid,” Mrs Moir said.

“They can cope with being in room temperature.”

Many people were recalling horror stories of fridge-stored Vegemite ruining their toast.

One person said their brother used to store it in the fridge and it would "near tear your toast apart" when he would try and spread it.

Another person implied they knew several people who stored Vegemite and peanut butter in the fridge, which they simply 'don't get it".

"I personally enjoy watching my bread/toast be ripped to pieces as I spread cold peanut butter or Vegemite. It’s the perfect disappointment to start my day!" one person said, hopefully sarcastically.

Though one person did raise a good point about the climate being a factor, suggesting Queenslanders might opt to put it in the fridge amid the humidity.

One person said on the Reddit thread that in the show, Bluey and his family lived in Queensland, which is where the show is animated.

"Queensland here, it's in the cupboard. Vegemite in the fridge is like trying to spread tar," one person from the Sunshine state confirmed.

Though one person said Vegemite will go "rancid" in if it's kept in the cupboard due to the heat and said it gets an "off smell and taste".

"Idk [I don't know] where you live, but in both Cairns and Gold Coast where I lived, always in the cupboard. Never had an issue," another Queenslander said.

Someone from the Top End weighed in and seemingly settled the debate.

"Darwin here. Maximum humidity achieved. It’s in the cupboard," they said.
