World War II veteran, 99, loses pet dogs in ferocious house fire

A 99-year-old World War II veteran has escaped an intense Brisbane house fire that killed his pet dogs and nearly claimed his prized war medals and memorabilia.

Fire alarms gave the man enough time to get out of his Salisbury home when the blaze broke out just after 7pm on Sunday.

Firefighters found the body of one of his dogs that died in the fire. A second dog remains missing.

Firefighters managed to retrieve his medals and other war memorabilia.

“They had obviously suffered a little bit in the fire,” a fire service spokesman told ABC radio.

“The medals themselves were in good nick but unfortunately one of the medals, out of the medal group of about five or six, was missing.

“But we retrieved everything else along with some memorabilia.”

The elderly man is recovering in hospital.

The fire is being investigated but at this stage it is not being treated as suspicious.
