Waiter admits faking racist remark on customer's receipt

A waiter who accused a customer of leaving a racist slur on a receipt has admitted that he fabricated the story.

“I did write it,” waiter Khalil Cavil told the Odessa American on Monday.

“I don’t have an explanation. I made a mistake. There is no excuse for what I did.”

The embarrassing admission comes after Saltgrass steakhouse in Odessa, Texas banned the customer who was accused of racism by 20-year-old waiter Khalil Cavil.

In a press release from Saltgrass Steakhouse on Monday chief operating officer Terry Turney revealed the hoax.

“After further investigation, we have learned that our employee fabricated the entire story,” he said.

“Racism of any form is intolerable, and we will always act swiftly should it occur in any of our establishments. Falsely accusing someone of racism is equaling disturbing.”

Mr Turney added that the banned customer had been contacted and invited to dine at the restaurant for free.

In addition, another company representative confirmed that Mr Cavil had parted ways with the company.

“All I can say is he’s no longer with the company,” spokeswoman Colleen Wagner told the Washington Post.

The incident gained attention as Mr Cavil, who is African American and Caucasian, posted that a racist receipt was left on one of his tables.

The now-deleted Facebook post, showed a photograph of a US$108 receipt with a zero on the tip line and a handwritten message saying “We don’t tip terrorist” and a circle around the server’s name ‘Khalil’.

“I share this because I want people to understand that this racism, and this hatred still exists,” Mr Cavil wrote.

“Although, this is nothing new, it is still something that will test your faith”.

Following the post, the public donated around US$1,000 to Mr Cavil who said that he was saving to attend college.

“All money is being processed and being return(ed),” Mr Cavil told the Odessa American.

“I’m sorry. I deeply made a huge, big mistake. And I’m in the process of getting the help that I need,” he said.
