Huge six-metre great white shark filmed just 50 metres off WA beach

An enormous great white shark has been spotted circling around a boat about 50 metres off a popular WA beach.

Esperance filmmaker Dave Riggs captured the spectacular drone footage after receiving reports of a shark near Fourth Beach at Twilight Bay.

Just days after filming a four-metre shark off the WA coast, Riggs captured this great white, believed to be around six-metres in length.

Footage shows the mammoth shark circling around an 8.5 metre patrol beach, giving a clearer indication of its size.

In 2015, a six-metre tiger shark was killed swimming near Lennox Head off the northern NSW coast, however many people consider a near-seven metre catch near Marino Bay in 1997 as the largest great white spotted in recent Australian history.

There are growing fears that the recent discovery of a whale carcass near Alexander Bay is attracting an above average number of sharks closer to shore.

Earlier this year, 7 News was told that frustrated Esperance locals had started to bait and kill sharks in a bid to protect their local beaches.

Just last month the WA government's shark deterrent subsidy was granted a further $200,000 for an additional 1000 devices.

WA's last fatal shark attack was in April when 17-year-old surfer Laeticia Brouwer was attacked while on a family holiday in Esperance.

Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly says of Western Australia's 15 fatal shark attacks since 2000, seven were surfers and six were divers, making them the most at-risk water users.
