WATCH: Great white shark attacks thrill seekers in cage

A great white shark has raised the heart rates of tourists who were cage diving in South Africa after it attacked the pen they were swimming in.

Frightening video of the nail-biting experience in Gansbaai begins with the large predator surfacing with its jaws wide open in an attempt to devour some bait, but just as it leaps out of the water the food is pulled away.

The great white appears furious as it charges towards the cage containing the tourists and begins angrily chomping at it and a buoy repeatedly.

The shark is eventually distracted when the bait handler throws some food into the water.

The adrenaline-filled tourists can be heard cheering and laughing as the large predator decides to leave them alone.

One can be heard saying, "That was the best man!"

Another described the no doubt frightening encounter as "awesome".

The brave tourists were likely buzzing from the experience, believed to have occurred in late November, for the days that followed.
