Man charged with murder after woman found shot dead outside hospital

A man has been charged with the shooting murder of his partner who was left for dead at a Melbourne hospital.

The St Albans man was charged with one count of murder on Friday, a day after the 42-year-old woman was shot inside a house, bundled into a car and dumped at Sunshine Hospital.

The woman died shortly after arriving at the hospital on Thursday night.

"While he was at the hospital, police attended and were concerned about her condition, and the male person had blood on his clothing," Detective Inspector Mick Hughes told reporters on Friday.

The man, 32, allegedly fled the hospital, crashing into two other cars before stealing one of them and leaving two people with minor injuries.

Police tracked the stolen vehicle and arrested the man, moments after he allegedly stashed a gun.

Homicide detectives searched the couple's house on Romsey Ave, where they say the shooting allegedly occurred.

"We know this poor woman has died as the result of a gunshot wound but what we don't know at this stage is how that occurred," Insp Hughes said.

"It is a graphic crime scene."

A pool of what looked like blood was visible outside the home's front door.

The man was also charged with carjacking, attempted carjacking and firearms charges.

He will face Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Saturday.
