Ambo service in jeopardy: chairman

Harvey could be without an ambulance service if a desperate call for help is unheeded.

An incident last week, in which Harvey's St John Ambulance Sub Centre officers were called to help an elderly man who had fallen on a footpath, highlighted the importance of the service to the town.

Ambulance officers Arthur Hall and Jo Eastcott were able to respond quickly to last Tuesday's incident.

They arrived at the scene within minutes to help the man, who required oxygen and was later taken to Harvey Hospital for observation.

It was the second call-out for the pair of officers rostered on duty that day.

Sub centre chairman of more than 21 years, Chris Sabourne, said Harvey was in dire need of more volunteer ambulance drivers and officers.

"Our current volunteers are being stretched to the limit," Mr Sabourne said.

"We desperately need more people to come forward to volunteer or the sub centre may be forced to close its doors.

"Harvey cannot afford to lose a service like this.

"Our centre, like many other volunteer groups in town, is struggling at the moment and I am urging people to come forward to help."

The Harvey sub centre has 24 volunteer ambulance officers/drivers. Mr Hall has been a volunteer for more than 18 years and Mrs Eastcott joined about two years ago.

Potential volunteers should phone 9729 3458.
