Terrifying footage shows kids sprinting in front of Melbourne trains

CCTV has emerged of children running across railway tracks seconds before an incoming train at a station in Melbourne.

The footage, released by Public Transport Victoria (PTV), shows about seven children scurrying across.

Alarmingly, the last four just make it over the tracks seconds before the train pulls in. It is unclear how old the children are.

PTV released the video as part of Rail Safety Week last month.

Part of the campaign’s focus was on discouraging passengers from rushing and injuring themselves while trying to avoid Melbourne trains.

Public Transport Victoria’s Alan Fedda urged people to put safety first.

“You can always wait for the next tram or the next train,” Mr Fedda said.

Other videos included a woman chasing down a moving train, trying to open the closing doors and a a cyclist narrowly missing an oncoming train.

Sydney Trains warn careless thrill seekers

Similar CCTV footage was released by Sydney Trains in May capturing the moments when passengers forget to watch where they’re walking.

Cameras tracked one young man hanging out with his friends at Central Station and followed him to Normanhurst.

After getting off, he decides to walk alongside the train as it departs, suddenly falling between the gap as the train gathers speed.

Incredibly, he walks away without injury.

Susannah Le Bron, from Sydney Trains’ customer service division, said “distraction” is mostly to blame.

In Sydney, rail bosses last month released video of teenage boys playing chicken and riding trains as part of an appeal to get thrills seekers to stop risking their lives.

In one of the videos, two of them are seen clinging to the back of a train at Lakemba Station in June. On the same day, they’re also seen passing through Belmore on the back of the carriage.

A young man at Bankstown is seen doing the same thing.

In June, an Australian man lost all his limbs after an apparent train surfing incident in Canada.

The 25-year-old man told Canadian police he was “riding the train” and fell off, suffering serious injuries, including severed or partially severed limbs.
