Teen left with serious burns after setting fire to HSC notes

A Sydney teenager was airlifted to hospital after seriously burning himself while setting fire to his Year 12 study notes.

The Higher School Certificate (HSC) student was left with multiple burns to his upper and lower body after torching piles of school study notes at a property in Arcadia – a semi-rural suburb in Sydney’s northwest – on Thursday morning.

“CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter was tasked shortly after 9am, landing in a paddock near where the incident occurred,” the rescue organisation said in a statement.

A CareFlight specialist doctor and critical care paramedic treated the 18-year-old boy at the scene as other emergency services arrived.

He was then flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.

The incident happened as more than 77,000 students across NSW woke up on Thursday to discover their HSC results.

It is not known whether the teen’s attempt to incinerate his notes was an act of disappointment or celebration over the outcome.

However one student, who achieved an extraordinary VCE feat, was this year’s first place-holder for Music 1.

Kiran Gupta excelled despite having to change one of his pieces days before the singing exam following throat surgery.
