Sydney train photo sparks debate: 'Which is more annoying?'

A commuter's photo of two women committing notoriously unpopular acts on a Sydney train has sparked a fiery debate online.

In a photo shared on Reddit, one woman can be seen sitting on the stairs in a crowded carriage, while another sitting to her right rests her leg on the empty seat opposite her.

"Which annoys you more?" the frustrated commuter captioned the image.

The passenger went on to explain the two women had interacted during the journey.

"The stair sitter started watching a video on full volume so foot-on-seat tapped them and said 'this is a quiet carriage!'" they added.

People react to passengers' behaviour

The act of sitting on the stairs elicited a mixed response from people online, as there could be several different scenarios at play.

"I sit on the stairs," one Redditor said. "I have severe arthritis in my hips. I can't stabilise myself, I have fallen before...no one offers the disability seats."

"I hate having to ask — especially when people are still distancing — so I just make do."

"I used to be a stair sitter, there would never be any seats when I got on and my back and feet would be absolutely f***ed after work," another commuter agreed.

"I’d get up just before we pulled in."

Others said they also believe it's fine to sit on the stairs as long as you're out of the way when people are entering or exiting the train.

However, numerous people said they had no empathy for the woman with her foot on the opposite seat, slamming her actions as downright "nasty".

"Feet on seat can p*ss off," one person said. "I'll walk up and ask them to move their feet."

The commuter who posted the image said there were "ironically two empty seats" where the passenger had her foot, suggesting the woman on the stairs could've otherwise sat there.

"Putting anything on a seat when people are standing is dubious," someone said. "At least offer to make way for them."
