"I can see clearly now the vodka's gone" Meldrum opens up about drinking.

Australia's most beloved music personality gave us all a scare when, on the eve of the TV miniseries premiere devoted to his life, he had a fall that nearly ended it all.

It was, he says, a wake up call to start taking care of himself.

"I'm doing a cover version of a song that was so big way, way back, it's called "I can see clearly now the vodka's gone," The 73 year old said.

"I enjoy life and now I'm back I'm going back to my first love, music production."

He was almost paralysed by the fall on a Bangkok pavement in January, which he says wasn’t caused by drinking.

"The success of the miniseries, the success of the album and the documentary, everything is going up the charts and I keep falling down."

Meldrum made the call to ditch his drink of choice, vodka.

The miniseries 'Molly' starring Sam Johnson was a huge success and sent the soundtrack to Molly Meldrum's life platinum.

The miniseries highlighted his relationships with men and has encouraged Meldrum to open up about his sexuality, a topic he usually steers away from.

"In my mind I was never in the closet, I was always out somewhere," He told Melissa Doyle.

"It wouldn’t have really been accepted back then, I'm not really sure my family would have accepted it."

"It is hard for someone that is a bit different."

He said gay marriage should be legal, but it isn’t something he sees in his future.
