Terrifying dashcam footage shows why you should never drive tired

A teenage driver is lucky to have escaped serious injury when falling asleep at the wheel after a big night followed by a long day of fishing.

A Queensland nurse who had just finished her shift was making her way home when she saw the 19-year-old driver veer off the road in her rear-view mirror – with her rear dash camera capturing the terrifying ordeal.

Footage shows the 4WD driver making his way down Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road in Cornubia, southeast of Brisbane, on Sunday just before 4pm when he starts to make his way over the lane and into a tree-filled embankment.

The husband of the nurse told Yahoo7 News she saw the car disappear into the bushland and rushed to his aid.

“She went over straight away and helped him. He’d been up all night and then went fishing for the day,” he said.

“He said he’d fallen asleep at the wheel."

The Beenleigh resident said it was incredibly lucky the teen didn't veer the other way, into oncoming traffic.

“It could have been so much worse … he was running on adrenaline but didn’t appear too injured," he added.

“[The car] was in a bad way, it’d clipped a few trees, air bags had gone off, it looked bad.

“He was pretty shaken, calling his mates to tell them what had happened.”

A spokesperson from Queensland Ambulance told Yahoo7 News they attended the scene but the teenage driver didn’t require treatment.

“We assessed the driver and he did not appear to be injured and did not require treatment or transport,” the spokesperson said.
