Police dog collapses after chasing men in three kilometre pursuit

A police dog was taken to the vet in a serious condition, after collapsing following a pursuit of two men for more than three kilometres.

Newcastle City Police District officers set up a crime scene after an alleged break and enter at an elderly man's home.

The police dog, named Kane, and his handler helped to track two suspects to nearby bushland.

Police will allege in court that two men tried to climb through a window at a property on Stayton Street, Adamstown Heights, at about 11.30pm on Saturday.

An 84-year-old had been in the home at the time, authorities allege.

Two men, aged 22 and 27, were arrested after being contained by a senior constable and Kane. The men were taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment.

Shortly after, Kane collapsed and was taken to the vet in a serious condition.

Fortunately his condition has significantly improved, a spokesperson for NSW Police said.

The 27-year-old man was charged with break and enter with intent, enter enclosed lands, resist arrest, goods in custody and possess house breaking implements.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in court on Sunday.

Police said the 22-year-old is expected to be charged upon release from hospital.
