'No time to run': Man attacked by shovel-wielding intruder fights back

Security video has captured the frightening moment a Perth man was repeatedly smashed in the face with a shovel by an intruder.

George Kulacz, 62, said he was woken at 3am on the morning of April 29 by his dog barking, and went to his back door to investigate.

He was confronted by two men, one attacking him with a shovel while the other ransacked the house, stealing a handbag and an iPhone.

Mr Kulacz, a chimney sweeper, fought back, even when he was hit twice in the head with the shovel.

“My hand was bouncing off the handle of the shovel while I was trying to upper cut him – one, two, three, four,” he said.

“There was no time to run, it was either fight or flight.”

Bleeding heavily, Mr Kulacz managed to chase the intruder away, but he was covered in cuts and needed 11 stitches to his head.

A 28-year-old man from Rivervale was charged over the attack but police are still trying to identify the second offender.

Mr Kulacz didn’t realise he had chased after the intruders – he has no memory of it due to shock, but says his self-defence training must have kicked in.

Asked if he would do it again, his response was: “No way.”

“I’d turn the light on and see who’s out there and then go out the front,” he said.

“If they’re out the back, I’m out the front!”
