Man accused of driving 20kms on wrong side of road

A drunk man has allegedly driven almost 20 kilometres on the wrong side of a Melbourne highway.

The 32-year-old motorist allegedly made his way north along Eastlink through Ringwood at about 1.30am on Tuesday morning, dodging oncoming vehicles as he sped by with his hazard lights on.

His alleged escapade lasted for 12 minutes and passed through Mullum Mullum tunnel before Eastlink staff activated a boom gate.

Police tried to intercept him and allege he drove at officers. He finally dumped his car, which by that time had lost its back left wheel.

Police say he fled the scene but he was eventually tracked down by the dog squad. He was hiding in bushes in Oakleigh East.

Police say the man, from Carnegie, blew .178 and is facing a string of serious charges.
