'Too soon?' Christmas decorations, mince pies hit stores in early September

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas and it's only spring with fruit mince pies, festive packaging and Christmas trees hitting the shelves at shops around the country.

There's still 112 days until the most festive day of the year but already consumers are noticing decorations and the traditional minced pies finding their way out on to the shelves, with many questioning if it's too soon.

The move has prompted claims it’s a sign of “slightly nauseating” gross commercialisation.

However, some people are happy to be able to lay their hands on tasty fruit mince pies at any time of the year.

News 360 editor Kathy Lipari told Sunrise "it isn't too soon" for her because she needs "to get organised".

"I'm one of those people that can’t believe it’s September already - I need a few months to get my head around that we’re facing Christmas already," she said.

"So bring it on - more decorations, more minced pies, I need to get organised as I'm sure the rest of the country does.

While Samantha Armytage said having the decorations out now "is kind of exciting", Ben Davis from Radio 4BC in Brisbane disagreed and said mince pies are "made to be consumed at Christmas".

"There's no other time we do that and if you have it every day of the year, it loses its impact," he said.

"It would be like having a birthday every day of the year."
