Spectator fighting for life after splashed with burning fuel at drag race

Twelve people have been taken to hospital after they were splashed with burning fuel at a drag racing event in Alice Springs.

It happened at the Red CentreNATS when flash flames exploded from a competition car, spraying the crowd.

Spectator vision shows flames shooting out from the track after fuel ignited after a car was doing burnouts.

Audience members ran for their lives as the flash flames exploded.

A 48-year-old man and his 19-year-old son, believed to be from New South Wales, have been transported to the burns unit at Royal Adelaide Hospital.

It is understood that they have burns to 20 per cent of their bodies including face, arms and legs, one of them is fighting for his life in a critical condition, while the other is in a stable condition.

Ten others are serious but stable.

The organisers have shut down the competition to focus on the injured.

A police investigation is also underway.
