A stranger has pushed a random woman off the platform onto the train tracks at a busy Melbourne station at the start of peak hour.

The assailant fled the scene while the woman was taken to hospital by ambulance in a stable condition.

Members of the public and train network staff helped her off the track, a witness says.

The incident happened at the busy Richmond Station near the Melbourne CBD, just before 4pm on Wednesday.

Multiple train lines go through Richmond from the CBD loop, before diverting out in different directions.

Sky News reporter Simon Love happened to be at the station at the time.

“A lady was just pushed onto the train tracks at Richmond station by someone who then ran off,” Mr Love posted on social media.

“Good samaritans then got onto the tracks, lifted her up before she received medical attention, and (Metro Trains staff were) on scene.

“I’ve reported what I saw to police. Thank goodness she’s OK.”

Mr Love said the person who pushed the woman left the scene, and in the confusion other commuters believed multiple people may have been pushed.

Ambulance Victoria said the woman was taken to Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

A police spokeswoman said no arrests had been made, and the people involved were not known to each other.

Metro Trains did not report any delays.
