Horrifying video shows dog tumble out of ute on busy highway

A horrifying video of a dog tumbling from the back of a ute has gone viral on TikTok, sparking an angry response.

The video, shared last month by TikTok user @nelyailin, was filmed as she drove in the middle lane of a highway, believed to be in the US.

Just up ahead in the right lane is a black ute with a dog in the back of the tray.

The dog is seen with its front legs perched on up on the tray, as if it was ready to jump.

Suddenly, the dog tumbles onto the road and then runs off to the left.

"I had a feeling he was going to jump, I was trying to go slow [as f**k]," the TikTok user said in the caption.

"Poor baby."

The dog seemed fine when it got up and trotted away, but people on TikTok were desperate for an update, wanting to know if the dog was okay.

People were also furious the dog was allowed in the back of the tray.

"Why do people put their dogs in such dangerous situations," someone said in the comments.

'My dogs are in the backseat with the air conditioning on, enjoying the ride."

People were furious with the dog's owners for putting it back there in the first place, many saying the decision to do so was "stupid".

Another person said they were a vet technician and they had seen "so many" dogs die from doing this, while many had similar stories.

"My dad was returning from work one time when he saw a dead dog on the side of the road because it jumped off," someone warned.

While road rules differ in each state or territory regarding how animals can travel in vehicles, the RSPCA recommends animals being both safe and comfortable during a car trip.

Restraining a dog in a vehicle is one way to prevent it from jumping out of the vehicle.
