Family discover small 'brown snake' in garage - but it's not as it seems

A family has discovered what they thought was a small brown snake in their garage on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast but it turned out to not be what it seemed.

The Snake Catcher 24/7 Sunshine Coast’s Stuart McKenzie was called out to a home in Buderim over the weekend after a family called claiming a brown snake was slithering in their garage.

“This is a first,” the snake catcher wrote on Facebook.

“They did get one thing correct – the brown colour.”

It turns out it wasn’t a brown snake though.

The creature slithering in the garage was actually a giant worm.

Mr McKenzie told Yahoo7 the giant worm was tucked under an old carpet in the garage.

“From a distance it looked like a snake,” he said.

“They were petrified of snakes so didn’t want to go close to it.”

It’s not the first time Mr McKenzie has been called to someone’s Sunshine Coast in what turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.

A Sippy Downs woman called the Sunshine Coast snake catcher in October last year distressed over what she thought was a snake “hanging out on the lawn in her backyard”.

It turns out the woman didn’t have a snake in her yard – it was actually a rubber tie down strap.

Gold Coast woman Kellie Mace also found a giant worm while on a walk on Tamborine Mountain last October.

Tamborine Mountain is well known for its giant earthworms, which can sometimes be up to two metres in length.
