Detail on parking sign baffles drivers: 'Am I stupid?'

Drivers offered a number of theories as to what the parking sign could mean.

A driver has been left confused over a puzzling parking sign on a Melbourne street.

Sharing a photo of the sign on Reddit, the driver asked for clarification as to how long they could park in the spot to avoid getting a fine.

"Am I stupid? How long can I park here on a Friday afternoon in January?" the caption on the photo read.

The sign, across the road from Elwood Beach in Melbourne's south, showed that a vehicle could only park in the spot for two hours between the times of 10am and 8pm on Saturday and Sunday.

However, things took a confusing turn when the sign also stated it was only two-hour parking also on public holidays between November 1 and March 31st. Below the sign was another directive that said: "Permit Area 16".

A number of motorists attempted to decipher exactly what the sign meant, with one suggesting the driver could park as long as they wanted on a Friday afternoon.

"I read it as 2-hour parking between 10am-8pm on weekends and public holidays from November to March," a comment read.

"I would therefore conclude that you can park for an unlimited time during any other period (Mon - Fri excluding public holidays and any day April to October).

"Permit holders for area 16 are probably able to park at any time but I'd need to see the provisions of the permit."

Others however shared their own theories about what the puzzling parking sign could mean, with some suggesting only permit holders could park in the spot outside of the times on the sign.

"I would guess that parking is scarce only during the times when it is limited to two hours. Weekends and public holidays in summer. It’s probably near a park or the zoo or something. Outside of good weather on most people’s days off, residents can probably park easily, so no restrictions are necessary," one offered.

"Due to the permit area 16 sign underneath, I would read that as outside 10am-8pm on weekends and public holidays from November to March, it is a permit-only zone. But it's very ambiguous," another said.

"That sounds right, I lived on a street with a similar sign because I lived by an oval, there were AFL games there, so in those seasons there were stricter rules for road parking, which sucked because I had to park on the street because of my stupid roommate ... So I had a ticket for parking there, in front of my house, for longer than allowed," a third shared.

Some Redditors said it didn't matter who was right and the fact there was debate over the sign meant it needed clarification.

"Looking at how much debate here … the sign has failed. It should be obvious and obviously it isn’t," one commented.

"Your post kinda proves just how absurdly convoluted the parking instructions are," another wrote.
