Cinemagoers make terrifying discovery on seat: 'On purpose'

The group thankfully were uninjured after finding a sewing needle on one of their seats.

Cinemagoers have made a terrifying discovery during a film's screening with police now investigating whether the hard-to-see item was maliciously placed there.

A group visited the cinema in the Chinese city of Ningbo on July 1 and after locating their seats they found a needle on one of them, Chinese outlet The Paper reported.

The cinema responded by saying they believed a customer had left the needle, with authorities contacted over the discovery. Police reported no one was injured in the incident and are attempting to determine who left the needle and whether it was accidental or not, Qihuan Video reported.

The cinema said it would offer the group new tickets or a refund as compensation.

The discovery shocked many online after it was shared on Twitter-like site Weibo, with many skeptical of how it could be have been an accident.

"Embroidery in the dark?" one person asked. "On purpose," another declared.

Five years on from Australia's needle contamination crisis

The incident evokes memories of Australia's food safety crisis in 2018 when several punnets of strawberries contained fruit that were contaminated with sewing needles.

Close to 200 reports of needles were reported, many believed to be copycat incidences, before a factory worker was arrested. Charges laid against the Vietnamese national were later dropped.
