Boy scout skills help elderly man survive in bush

Boy scout skills have helped a lost elderly man survive a night in rugged bushland north of Brisbane.

John Glasson was inspecting land at Ocean View when he became lost and spent the night huddled in a cave.

Mr Glasson said he wanted to see what the bottom end of the property looked like. Beyond the scrub is a steep drop and 32 hectares of bushland.

But when Mr Glasson didn’t return, neighbours alerted police.

Two helicopters, police and SES crews searched until 3am.

Dayboro Police Sergeant Ken Robinson said PolAir eventually found him.

“But the difficulty of terrain (meant) we couldn’t walk into him there last night (Thursday),” he said.

Stranded in the bush, Mr Glasson turned to his boy scout skills and found shelter in a cave and a creek with “beautiful water, running and running well”.

Mr Glasson found out which way to go to get out of the bush and came out about 90 metres to where his car was parked.

Despite his night lost in the bush, the 74-year-old still wants to buy the land at Ocean View.
