Is this the most absurd Bondi rental yet?

While Sydney tenants enjoyed the biggest rent drop in 15 years recently, a room for rent in the sought-after suburb of Bondi suggests landlords are still asking outrageous prices.

According to the Domain Rental Report, Sydney rental unit prices dropped by 4.5 per cent over the last 12 months.

But a bedroom in an apartment on Bondi’s Hall Street which was listed online this week has highlighted the exorbitant fees that landlords are asking for when it comes to prime beachside living.

In several less than flattering pictures, a man took to a Sydney Facebook group asking for up to $600 for a spare room in his three-bedroom unit.

“Private room for lease in the best location!” the man wrote in the listing.

And while he noted the room was for up to three people, there was little mention of the sleeping arrangements in the bedroom.

Judging by the photos, there is a bed for one person.

However where the second or third person would sleep is somewhat confusing.

Either one would be tucked up snuggly with the first person in the bed, or would be forced to squeeze into an elevated bed wedged in above.

The third might have to settle for the sofa.

The person who listed the apartment did note that tenants would qualify for a discount in exchange for “some basic cleaning duties”.

The listing has since been edited twice, firstly with the elevated bed cropped out of one image and then the listing revised the amount of people the room was suitable for, to two.

Bondi, however, is no stranger to ridiculous rentals.

In April, a room inside a room was listed for $185 a week.

And last year, a room which would barely fit a single bed, was advertised at $200 a week.

Last month, realestate.com.au chief economist Nerida Conisbee told Yahoo Finance Australia that rent had become too much in Sydney’s east, and landlords began responding to a lack of interest in rental properties.

“I think rent became too expensive – like the property market, prices rose by so much and demand pulled back,” she said.

“As a result, we’re seeing this pricing drop.”

It appears this landlord is yet to take note.
