Grammy-nominated electronic dance performer Tim Bergling, known professionally as Avicii, was found dead last month in Muscat, Oman at the age of 28.

In a statement released on Thursday, his family alluded his death was suicide, saying “he could not go on any longer”.

“He really struggled with thoughts about meaning, life, happiness. He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace,” the statement said.

Throughout his career, Bergling suffered from numerous health problems, including acute pancreatitis in part due to excessive drinking.

He was also said to be suffering from stress and severe anxiety.

In 2014, he had surgery to remove his gallbladder and appendix. These issues eventually led Avicii to retire from touring in 2016. But he continued to produce music.

“Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight,” the statement added.

He is survived by his parents, Klas Bergling and Anki Liden, sister Linda, and brothers Anton and David.
