Australia Post customer blamed for damage to parcel: 'What did you expect?'

A customer's delivery gripe has divided Aussies.

An Australia Post customer has vented his anger after receiving a delivery that had been torn apart – yet after sharing his frustrations online, some suggest he is to blame. In images shared to Facebook, the package can be seen in tatters with a tear down the middle and sticky tape wrapped around the lower half.

"Repaired by Australia Post. I think the f**k not," the disgruntled man wrote, sparking a bitter debate over who's responsible for the damage.

While some customers put the blame on Australia Post for leaving "gaping holes" in the box, others defended the delivery service and said the sender was at fault for incorrectly packing the parcel.

"Looks like a very thin cardboard box with a lot of empty space. What do you think is going to happen when such a package is handled by machinery and heavier packages are bound to land on top of it?" someone asked. "Anyone who doesn't pack parcels to withstand the rough treatment that any sane person knows the parcel is going to encounter is a moron."

Australia Post weighs in

"The vast majority of mail delivered by Australia Post arrives safely but it's clear something has gone wrong in this instance," a spokesperson for the national mail service told Yahoo News.

The spokesperson added that for any delivery concerns, the customer could get in touch with them via the AusPost app or by calling 13 POST (13 7678).

Packing tips for safe delivery

AusPost also urged senders to make sure they were correctly packaging their deliveries. "To help items arrive safely, customers should ensure parcels are always packed appropriately in sturdy packaging that is suitable for what's inside," the spokesperson explained.

Among their top tips was choosing the right packaging: "It should be durable and secured with heavy-duty packing tape. Items shouldn't be too loose or crammed in too tight."

Customers should also ensure their items won't bend during transit, and should fill empty spaces with shredded paper, tissue paper or void filler to ensure items don't move around.
