Being able to weave through traffic on a busy highway is an advantage of riding a motorbike — but the lack of vehicle space can prove challenging at times. For one rider, a creative solution was required in order to carry some precious cargo, with little more than a backpack and some miniature googles allowing man's best friend along for the ride.

Over the weekend unsuspecting motorists were delighted after catching sight of a dog travelling along the Westgate Bridge in Melbourne while travelling in it's owner's backpack as the motorbike rider zoomed past traffic.

With the rider wearing a helmet and the dog sporting miniature protective googles, the duo were an unexpected delight for other motorists with one passenger snapping a couple photos and sharing them online.

The motorist joked the dog seemed to be "checking the traffic behind them" like a typical "backpack driver".

"We were all screaming in the car," they wrote.

The person who shared the photos explained she was travelling in a car around 80 km/h with the motorcyclist and his companion easily travelling at a similar speed.

"We were most likely doing about 80 kph at this stage. The ears were flapping left and right. Did not look like his first rodeo," they said.

After images were shared online Aussies went wild for the sight, calling it "cute" and saying they would love to catch sight of the pair on the road too.

"He needs a little helmet and a leather jacket too," one joked, while another compared him to The Fonz — the always cool charter from Happy Days.

Dogs are allowed to travel on a motorbike as long as the dog is not between the rider and the handlebars, is not interfering with the rider's ability to control the motorbike or obscuring the driver's view — meaning the rider and dog in question are free to continue their antics.
