Aussie mum faces losing thumb after simple manicure mistake

A trip to a nail salon went horribly wrong for a Western Australian woman who claims a simple mistake has caused her ongoing pain.

Sue, 48, claims she's suffering from a staph bacteria infection after visiting a nail salon in Perth two years ago, and now could lose her thumb entirely.

Speaking with Nine News, the mum claimed the technician mistook her real nails for acrylic and began grinding them away before allegedly soaking them in acetone. Even after telling them "they were my actual nails, they kept grinding them," she said, also claiming that hygiene rules weren't followed.

"You wouldn't go into a dirty dentist so why would you go into a dirty nail bar?" she said. "It really throbs and you can't get away from it".

No hygiene laws for nail salons

The Perth mum is now taking legal action as she lives in constant pain. Sue spent five days in the hospital because of the infection. Doctors have reportedly had to remove part of her thumb bone already, and the worst-case scenario would be amputating it, she was told.

Consumer Protection WA has reportedly received 10 complaints regarding nail procedures in the past year. There are no specific hygiene laws for nail salons, only guidelines.

Turning these guidelines into regulations would "give certainty to the beauty industry", Slater and Gordon senior associate Joachim Azzopardi told Nine News. He argued "those practices were not up to standard", which ultimately "resulted in Sue's nasty infection to her nail bed".

Woman's warning after nail infection

Previously, a New South Woman was forced into surgery after experiencing "unbearable" pain following a nail appointment. The woman's finger ended up becoming infected after getting infills.

She shared her experience on Facebook at the time to warn others. She claimed the "tools are taken with each nail technician from client to client, with no evidence of sterilisation in between clients".

"I hadn’t really worried about it thinking nothing bad would ever happen....until now!!!" she said.
