Woman posts Facebook warning after recording stranger following her

A woman has spoken out against harassment after she filmed a man following her in a car while she was out jogging.

McKenzie Smalley, a 24-year-old personal trainer from Scottsdale, in the US state of Arizona, was out jogging last week when a man began following her. In a Facebook post with a video, Ms Smalley wrote she’s been “whistled at, catcalled, had cars full of men honking” at her but has never been “followed deliberately”.

In a disturbing video, Ms Smalley is seen being followed by a man in a ute who calls out to her while she’s jogging. She turns down his advances but he laughs it off.

“Girl, you got me barking in the street,” he says.

“I need you to stop following me right now,” the 24-year-old says.

“I don’t know you.”

The man laughs.

Ms Smalley later wrote, at first, she found the situation funny but didn’t realise what was going on and that she had to tell the man to stop following her “multiple times” which you don’t see in the video.

The video then cuts to her, appearing more distressed, saying, “He won’t leave me alone”, and later she tells the camera, “I literally just had to run away from that guy”.

“OK, guys. Even if you are not actually physically touching a girl, harassing her by following her on the street is just as bad,” Ms Smalley says.

“Because honestly I felt super scared for a moment. He would not leave me. He was like, ‘I’m about to get out of this car and chase you’.”

The 24-year-old later adds the “most frustrating part” of her ordeal was that no one helped her and that cars drove past even though she was "giving them the eye” to signal she was in trouble.

“So, if you see someone harassing a girl – do something,” she says.

Her video has more than 12,000 views.

Ms Smalley told ABC 15 Arizona the man was African-American and appeared to be in his late 30’s or early 40’s. He also had dreadlocks.

She said he followed her for about five minutes and claims he also barked at her.

The woman said she’s received messages from men apologising for the man in the video’s behaviour and hopes the video will encourage women to take a strong stance against harassment.
