'Not my responsibility': Stepfather charged after five-year-old boy found weighing 11kg

A US man charged with child neglect told police it was “not his responsibility” to look after his wife’s clinically malnourished child.

Brian Hall, 29, from Daytona Beach in Florida, was arrested days after his wife Naomie Hall was taken into custody and charged with neglecting her starved five year old.

She reportedly admitted to Daytona Police that it had been up to five days she had fed the child, who was found weighing just over 11 kilograms and eating stale cereal from the Halls’ apartment carpet.

Medical reports suggested the child’s skin was thin and dry, while his feet were peeling and blistered.

Brian Hall, however, did not believe it was his job to feed the child, police said.

"He is not my responsibility. I'm not his father. I come from a rich and white family,” he said, according to quotes in the Orlando Sentinel.

Brian Hall reportedly told officers that his two children, who also lived in the apartment, were fine.

“Those two are taken care of,” he said, before leaving, according to WESH.

The five year old, who cannot walk or talk, likely due to the neural condition agenesis of the corpus callosum, was taken into intensive care in a hospital at Halifax.

Two other children in the couple’s care have been removed by the Department of Child Services.

Naomie Hall has been charged with child neglect causing great harm. Brian Hall is charged with with failing to report child neglect.
