Hundreds without power in Queensland as Easter long weekend looms

Hundreds of residents in Mackay, the Whitsundays and Townsville are hoping their homes will be reconnected with electricity before the Easter long weekend.

Cyclone Debbie cut power to almost 65,000 customers between Townsville and Mackay when it hit late last month.

About 99 per cent of people had been reconnected as of Tuesday, but another 450 were still waiting.

Ergon Energy's Restoration Plan committed to restoring electricity to all customers as soon as it was "safe to do so" with grid supply and generators.

It aimed to have all customers reconnected by Thursday, April 13.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk visited the region on Tuesday and paid tribute to the hard work of the more than 1200 Energy Queensland workers.

"To date 99 per cent of customers in Airlie Beach have been restored," she said.

"Work continues in Bloomsbury, Dingo Beach, Shute Harbour and Strathdickie."

Daydream Island Resort and Spa will remain closed until 2018.

The resort’s management said it would bring forward refurbishments to coincide with clean up following the cyclone.

It is expected to re-open mid-2018.
