'Stay out of floodwater': Bull shark washes up in north Queensland after Cyclone Debbie

A bull shark has become an unexpected victim of Cyclone Debbie after it was found dead in floodwaters in north Queensland.

The metre-and-a-half bull shark was discovered on Thursday morning in a puddle in Ayr, a town of Burdekin, just north of where Debbie made landfall earlier this week.

It is believed the shark possibly became stranded as water surged through the area, causing pockets of flooding.

The SES reportedly towed the shark back to the river, but the fish could not be revived.

Sharing images of the shark, QLD Fire and Emergency urged people to "Stay out of floodwater."

Bull sharks, turtles and barracudas are known to frequent the Burdekin River, which runs through North and Far North Queensland.

Following the discovery, reports surfaced of the death of the cockatoo rescued after it was stripped of its feathers during the peak of the cyclone.

The bird was rescued in the aftermath of the storm but was found lifeless in her box on Thursday morning.

Affectionately named Debbie, she has been buried in the same forest she was found in.

The animal casualties are a clear example that it’s not just humans who have felt the devastation of the cyclone.
