It was a case of dumb, dumber and dumbest.

Three teenagers who allegedly robbed a house in Missouri in the United States reportedly mistook the ashes of the homeowner’s father for a stash of cocaine.

Police say the boys broke into the house in November last year and stole cash, electronics and a wooden box filled with a white powdery material.

As they drove away from the scene, one of the teenagers decided to taste the substance thinking it was dugs.

To his horror, he quickly realised what it was and threw the box out the window.

17-year-old Devin Gesell later confessed to the crime.

He told authorities he had acted as lookout for his two friends, aged 15 and 16, while they broke into the property.

Gesell has been charged with several offences.

His two accomplices will be tried as juveniles.
