WATCH: Nurse fights tears as she comforts dying cancer patient with special song

Footage of a nurse who sat beside a cancer patient's bedside and sung to comfort the woman in her dying days, has touched many who have praised her kindness.

Margaret Smith, 63, of Nashville, Tennessee in the US, reportedly suffered from liver cancer for about a year and was too ill to survive a transplant.

Video shows the nurse fight back tears as she sings the woman the comforting tune.

Ms Smith’s family have called the young nurse an “angel” for the compassionate gesture, which helped put the woman at ease.

Footage of Olivia Nuefelder sitting beside the woman and singing sweetly to the patient has moved many of the almost four million people who have viewed the video her daughter shared on Facebook last Monday.

"This nurse sat with my mom for hours while the medicine from too much Anesthesia and sang a very special song to my sweet mother to comfort her. You never left her side by choice!!" Megan Smith wrote with the post.

"Words cannot describe the appreciation and love we feel for nurse Olivia who mom calls her angel!

"Your dedication to your patients is beyond any that I have seen, you truly are a beam of light and I cannot thank you enough for the compassion and care and love you shared for my mother. God bless you Olivia!"

Ms Smith was later moved to a nursing home before she passed away on Wednesday, KTLA5 reported.

Nurse Neufelder said the response to the viral video has been a life-changing experience and she was glad she was able to provide comfort in the woman’s dying days.
