Former football player gave out condoms, orchestrated gang rape of unconscious woman he was dating

A jury has convicted a former US university football player of orchestrating the gang rape of an unconscious woman, who he had been dating.

Brandon Vandenburg was found guilty on all counts of raping a woman who he began dating two weeks earlier in his Nashville Tennessee dorm room in June 2013.

He now faces 15 to 25 years in jail and as the verdict was read out as he was taken into custody and his parents began to cry.

It was also revealed in court that the ex-Vanderbilt University football player passed out condoms to teammates and they reportedly giggled as they inserted a water bottle inside the girl and sent footage of vicious gang assault to friends.

The jurors in the case had to decide whether to hold Vandenburg criminally responsible for what the other three players were accused of doing to the woman in a dorm room.

All four former players were all charged but only two have so far been accused of raping and sexually assaulting the woman.

Vandenburg's lawyers had argued that he was too drunk to form the necessary intent to direct or encourage players he didn't even know to commit the crime.

The defence maintained that Vandenberg was a newly-arrived recruit to the school and had asked teammates outside the dorm to help him carry the unconscious woman into his room after he couldn't get her into her apartment.

Vandenberg's lawyers told jurors that the other players were on the woman as soon as they got her in the room.

But prosecutors portrayed Vandenburg as a villain who betrayed a woman who trusted him by plying her with alcohol and encouraging others to violate her.

Prosecutors said Vandenberg passed out condoms to the other players and then took videos of the crime and sent it to friends as it was happening.

Vandenburg and former player Cory Batey were convicted last year but the verdicts were thrown out after it was revealed that a juror had not disclosed that he had been a victim of statutory rape.

The retrial comes amid during an ongoing debate about sexual assaults on campus including a the former Stanford swimmer who was given a six month sentence for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman behind a rubbish tip.
