A five-year-old boy has died after he became tangled in the ropes of a massive kite and dragged into the air, then fell nearly 20 metres to the ground.

The horrible incident was captured on camera in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, and shows how the local boy, Van Minh Dat, is being pulled up into the sky.

The boy was believed to be helping his mother at a drinks stall while members of the Saigon Kite Club tried to get the huge kite flying.

A woman, claiming to be the boy's aunt, witnessed the accident and reportedly said the kite kept falling to the ground and at one point knocked over a table and some chairs near the drink stall.

She believes that Dat may have come near the kite to pick up some fallen soft drink bottles and became tangled in the ropes, when strong winds got hold of the kite, Thanh Nien News reported.

The aunt claimed she rushed to pull him down, but failed as the kite soared too fast.

While in the air, the lines started to snap and Dat tried to get hold of another one, but failed and plummeted to the ground.

He was rushed to hospital but died soon afterwards.

The members of the Saigon Kite Club said they were practicing for an upcoming kite festival, using the kite which spans 15 metres.

According to another kite club, some people had been tasked with making sure no children approached the kites, but somehow did not notice Dat.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
