Boy wakes from coma addicted to cheese and swearing

An English teenager picked up some bad habits after waking from a nine day coma - eating blocks of cheese and dropping F-bombs.

Kai Thomas, 15, collapsed last June after a massive brain bleed. Doctors at Sheffield Children's hospital performed a six-hour surgery to release pressure on Kai’s brain. To aid his healing, he was then put in a medically-induced coma.

After waking up, he initially could not talk or walk.

“Doctors said the trauma of the bleed and subsequent surgery had caused him to regress. He’d also lost his power of speech and movement,” Tracey, Kai’s mother, told the Daily Mail.

Once he regained the power of speech and movement, his mother noticed an immediate change in his personality. He had developed strange compulsions. She began to notice cheese going missing from the fridge and was shocked by his foul mouth.

She told the Daily Mail about the first moment she realised something was not quite right with Kai.

“One day I was in the kitchen, when I heard Kai yelling in his bedroom.

"He was screaming: "F***, b******, s***".

"I wondered what on earth was going on - the expletives were coming thick and fast.”

When she checked on her son she found him in his room munching on a block of cheese.

“He had always liked cheese but now he was obsessed with it,” she said.

Tracey said the changes in her son are difficult for her to cope with, especially since he was always well-behaved before his head trauma.

Kai is now mainly home-schooled while he is healing. Tracey says it is a long journey but the old Kai is slowly but surely returning.
