'Goodbye Bali': Bali Nine duo arrive at 'execution island'

Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan have arrived at the island where they will be executed.

The Bali Nine ringleaders landed in Cilacap, Central Java, on Wednesday afternoon via plane and travelled by ferry to Nusakambangan island - 700km from Kerobokan prison - where the executions will take place.

A source told AAP that Sukumaran boarded the plane ahead of Chan, who said: "Goodbye Bali".

Indonesia is yet to announce when the pair and eight other drug offenders will be executed.

Chan and Sukumaran will be executed as soon as possible to show the world Indonesia is "trying very hard to combat drugs", said Indonesia's Attorney-General HM Prasetyo.

The jet touched down at Cilacap airport at around 8am local time, escorted by four fighter jets armed with missiles.

The journey to execution island began on Wednesday morning after two armoured vehicles known as barracudas took the men from the Bali jail in the pre-dawn dark.

The Bali Nine ringleaders thanked their guards at Kerobokan prison before being taken away.

Komang Gede Tri Utama Aria, of Bali Provincial Law and Human Rights Office, said prison guards entered the men's cells to remove them.

Andrew Chan's girlfriend and brother were spotted outside the gates of Kerobokan begging prison officials to let them say goodbye to their loved one.

Their pleas, however, were refused.

Nyoman Putra Surya, Head of the Corrections Division at Bali Provincial Law and Human Rights Office defended the decision not to allow Chan's brother Michael into the jail as he men were leaving.

"Yesterday, we gave all day," he said.

"Today was not visiting time.

"We gave the maximum chances last week."

"When they were picked up from cells, they didn't seem tense, they were relaxed," he said.

"There was no fighting."

Prison governor Sudjonggo said the Bali Nine pair were aware it was time to go when guards entered the supermax cells.

"We didn't have to say 'Wake up! Wake up,' they knew it was the morning because we had told them during the night."

The pair washed quickly and were dressed in less than ten minutes.

After some administrative procedures, the Australians were handcuffed and taken to separate armoured vehicles each with 10 heavily-armed police.

Authorities say Chan was wearing a red training jacket and Sukumaran was wearing a black parachute jacket and both were wearing shorts.

Mr Nyoman said the men thanked authorities for their care while they were in Bali.

"They were ready," he said.

"They even said thank you."

Mr Nyoman said the men smiled and shook their hands before they were searched and handcuffed.

"We handcuffed them, they were silent," he said.

"We handcuffed them to the front. We didn't cover their eyes.

"We treated them well."

How Indonesia carries out executions

  • The convicted must be notified 72 hours before execution

  • While waiting, they must be held in a special prison

  • If the convicted wants to say something, the statement or the message must be received by the prosecutor

  • If the convicted is pregnant, the execution will take place 40 days after the child is born

  • Their lawyer can attend the execution

  • The execution is not performed in public and conducted in the most modest possible way unless determined otherwise by the president

  • The head of local police forms the shooting team, consisting of one non-commissioned officer and 12 privates, under the command of an officer

  • The convicted can be accompanied by a spiritual counsellor

  • They must dress modestly and orderly

  • The commander will blindfold them with a piece of fabric, unless asked not to

  • They can stand, sit or kneel

  • If necessary their hands or feet will be tied to a pole

  • There will be between five and 10 metres between the convicted and the shooting team

  • In previous executions, the shooting team has comprised 12 men with rifles - three of them with live rounds - who aim at targets over the convicted's heart

  • Using a sword for the signal, the commander will order "ready" by swinging his sword up, ordering the team to aim at the convict's heart

  • By swinging his sword down quickly, he orders "shoot"

  • If the convicted isn't yet dead, the non-commissioned officer is ordered to shoot his pistol in his/her head, above the ear

  • A doctor will confirm the death and a report will be prepared on the execution

  • The body is handed to family or friends for burial, or to the state, with attention paid to religious beliefs.
