Aussies benefit from controversial VAR penalty
Mile Jedinak scored from the spot in the 38th minute after the Socceroos were awarded a controversial VAR penalty against Denmark at the World Cup.
The Danes had gone ahead in the seventh minute through a brilliant team move finished by Christian Eriksen.
It was the quickest goal Australia had conceded in a World Cup match since facing Croatia in 2006.
But the Socceroos pushed as the first half went on and a Mat Leckie header caught the arm of Yussuf Poulsen.
The referee initially let play continue but a quick VAR review resulted in a penalty to lock the scores up at 1-1.
Denmark did not complain to any great extent but Poulsen’s arm was not necessarily in an unnatural motion when it stopped the ball.
The penalty via an opposition handball was Australia’s second of the World Cup.
Jedinak scored from the spot after French defender Samuel Umtiti caught a Socceroos cross with his arm in last Saturday night’s opener.
