Woolworths shopper’s warning over ‘disgusting’ find in chicken packet

The shopper binned 1.5 kilograms of chicken after making the discovery.

A Woolworths shopper was disgusted by an unsightly find on her store-bought chicken as she cut the meat to cook it.

The chicken appeared to have green-beige stalks growing from inside it, with the customer from Kyneton, Victoria sharing she ended up throwing all the meat in the bin.

"What the hell Woolworths? Not a cyst in the bloody meat. [I] threw the lot out 1.5 kilograms," she wrote online, sharing an image.

She warned fellow shoppers to always check the meat they purchase from supermarkets before eating it, saying the chicken breast in question was hidden by other pieces of meat in the packaging.

"Always look at your chicken or meat, [this was the] last piece of the pack. Lucky for me I was going to cook the lot. God help me if I had cooked half and froze the rest," she said.

Aussies react to 'disgusting' chicken find

After the shopper warned others online, Aussies reacted in their hundreds using words like "disgusting" and "revolting" to describe the chicken.

"That’s foul, never eating chicken again," one wrote, while another said, "That is gross looking."

Woolworths respond to outrage surrounding discoloured meat

Yahoo News Australia understands the discolouration of the meat is caused by Deep Pectoral Myopathy which is caused when swelling occurs as a result of oxygen deficiency in the muscle.

"It’s not off, the muscle has died and the bruising of a chicken's muscle when it dies turns green. I know it looks really gross, but it definitely isn’t off" a shopper wrote online.

There have been several incidences of Aussie shoppers finding their chicken with green streaks in it, however, both Woolworths and Coles have deemed meat affected by the disease safe to eat.

"We take food safety and quality seriously and are aware of the customer’s report," a Woolworths spokesperson told Yahoo News. "If ever our customers have any concerns about the quality of the product they receive, we encourage them to return it to their local store or contact our Customer Hub for a refund or replacement."
