Woolworths customers 'shocked' by surprise discount
A Woolworths customer was left stunned after receiving a very unexpected and unexplained discount at the self-serve checkout recently.
After completing his weekly shop at the Alexandria store in NSW, Woolies customer Tom headed to the self-serve checkout to pay.
He started scanning his items and - without explanation - was given $10 off his shop.
A staff member simply walked over and scanned a barcode which instantly deducted the $10 amount from his $57.77 bill. He said the staffer then proceeded to apply the discount for other shoppers too.
“She just came up and said there, this will get you $10 off, and then she did the same for the people next to us,” Tom told Yahoo News Australia.
“I asked her what it was about and she said it was just a promo they were doing that day and didn’t explain much more about it.”
“It’s not every day you just randomly get $10 off your shop so it was a nice surprise.”
Tom said others around him were equally as shocked but happy to receive the random act of kindness from the staff member.
Woolworths explains surprise $10 off discount
While the unexpected discount surprised shoppers, there was in fact a one-day promotion running in that particular store.
On that day only, eligible customers in the local areas of the Alexandria, Marrickville Metro, Marrickville, and Mascot Woolworths stores received a coupon in the mail for $10 off their shop when they spend $50 or more, or $20 off when they spend $100 or more.
A Woolworths spokesperson explained to Yahoo News Australia that staff members were applying the discount in-store to all eligible customers on the day as a “gesture of goodwill”.
“At Woolworths, our teams strive to bring a little good to everyone every day, and this is yet another great example,” the spokesperson said.
“From time to time we run localised offers for customers and on this occasion, customers in the neighbourhood were offered $10 off their shop if they spent $50 or more.
“A few customers forgot their promotional vouchers, and on this occasion, our team applied the discount to their shop as a gesture of goodwill.”

How do you know there’s an offer in your area?
While Woolworths often runs nationwide promotions alongside Everyday Rewards promotions, these offers are different.
The Woolworths spokesperson explained that from time to time, local offers concentrating on a particular area may take place, focussing on particular stores for a certain period of time.
These eligible areas are selected at random, however, customers will be alerted to their area’s offers through discount vouchers in the mail which they can then present in stores.
For details on in-store and online promotions and Everyday Rewards promotions, it’s best to check the Woolies website.
