Woman found alive after banging on coffin at her funeral

This is the moment emergency workers rush a woman who was about to be buried to hospital after she banged on the lid of her coffin to say she was still alive.

She was then seen being treated by medics in the emergency room while still in the wooden box.

The shocking incident took place in Chiclayo province, Peru.

Rosa Isabel Cespedes Callaca, age not reported, had been pronounced dead after a car accident on the Chiclayo-Picsi road, in Lambayeque.

Her relatives had been carrying her coffin through the cemetery for burial when they noticed noises coming from inside the box.

They opened the coffin and found Rosa with her eyes open and obvious vital signs.

"[She] opened her eyes and was sweating. I immediately went to my office and called the police," cemetery caretaker Juan Segundo Cajo said.

Rosa was taken — still inside her coffin — to the nearby Referential Hospital Ferrenafe, where medics confirmed she did indeed have vital signs, albeit very low ones.

They connected her up to a life-support machine and her condition did improve slightly. However, she passed away a few hours later.

Her relatives expressed outrage at the fact she had been declared dead in the first place and handed over for the funeral, which took place on April 26.

"We want to know why my niece reacted yesterday, when we were taking her to be buried," an unnamed aunt said.

"We have the videos in which she pushes and touches the coffin."

The police are now working to ascertain whether staff at the Lambayeque Regional Hospital — where she was first treated — disconnected her, pronounced her dead and sent her to the morgue without proper review.

Rosa's brother-in-law died from serious injuries he sustained in the same road accident.

Her three nephews, who were travelling with them, are still in hospital and are in a delicate condition.
