Woman devastated after her 'missing' cat gets adopted by new family

A Perth woman claims her missing cat has been re-homed by a shelter after she spent weeks looking for it and is calling on its new family to come forward.

Bilan Ozman’s four-year-old cat Jannie went missing from the Perth suburb of Marangaroo in October, according to The West Australian.

The woman - whose Facebook page says she now lives in Sydney - claims she spent weeks door-knocking and searching the neighbourhood, as well as calling rangers and councils looking for her missing cat.

But it wasn’t until she saw her beloved pet on the Facebook page of an adoption agency recently that she thought she had cracked the case.

But it might be too late.

Jannie, who was now being called Chickpea, has since been adopted out to a new family.

Speaking to The West Australian, the chief executive of the Cat Haven adoption agency, Roz Robinson, said under state law cats without identification that were not claimed within three days could be re-homed.

“We take 9000 cats in a year at the shelter and we cannot hold cats for long periods of time,” she said

“We held the cat for six weeks and no one claimed him so we was put up for adoption, which we are allowed to do by law.”

‘Cats need to be microchipped’

Ms Robinson said owners need to abide by the law and get their cats sterilised and microchipped so they can be returned if they do go missing.

However Ms Ozman isn’t giving up.

She sent her mother in to speak with the cat shelter in an effort to find out where the animal had been re-homed.

“The Cat Haven were not willing to help. I just want to try and speak with the new owner and work something out,” Ms Ozman said.

On Sunday, she shared the West Australian story urging her friends and followers to share it, hoping it will help her reconnect with her family’s former cat.

In a previous Facebook post on October 30, she asked for help in finding the cat which had gone missing four days earlier.

“We asked our neighbours but no one has actually seen him. He wasn’t wearing a collar at the time of his disappearance,” the post said.
